Why is the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) the most recognized program for Functional Medicine?

The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) was founded in 1991 by Jeffrey Bland, PhD.. Dr. Bland, a Biochemist, developed the concept of Functional Medicine and is now known as “The Father of Functional Medicine.” Therefore, it is no surprise IFM offers the most comprehensive, rigorous and most well recognized program in the field of Functional Medicine.  Dr. Bland and a group of scientists and clinicians recognized that chronic disease was on the rise.  They also recognized that the idea of a disease provided minimal information as to the cause of the condition.  For example, the diagnosis of melancholic depression is a diagnosis that can have many different causes relating to hormonal imbalance, trauma and nutritional deficiency to name a few, yet the treatment is the same.  Dr. Bland recognized that there may be multiple systems involved in any chronic disease.  Dr. Bland also wrote the book "The Disease Delusion," which provides more information regarding this concept.

Dr. Bland and his team developed a new model for health care, that was based on systems biology and sought to find the root cause of disease.  There are protocols that were developed that are unique to Dr. Bland's model of Functional Medicine to include the timeline, matrix of systems biology, along with many other protocols, such as the 5R protocol for Gut health.   In Dr. Bland's model of Functional Medicine, lifestyle is first and foremost.  Nutrition, movement, social connections and stress management are always addressed and often a food first approach is taken along with education for the patients.  Dr. Bland's model did not support simply switching out a drug for a supplement.  Therefore, understanding where the Functional Medicine practitioner has been trained is very important!

There are other credible certification programs, but the IFMCP (Institute of Functional Medicine Practitioner) is recognized as gold standard for training in Functional Medicine. This is no surprise, as Dr. Bland was in the forefront of creating this certification.
